In this episode we follow Robert Smalls, an enslaved pilot who quietly commandeered the Confederate steamer Planter and navigated it past Charleston's forts into Union lines, freeing his family and delivering a valuable ship, arms, and intelligence.
The escape demonstrated Black skill and composure under pressure, challenged Confederate assumptions about authority, and helped propel Smalls into Union service and a long political career during Reconstruction.
